Incident evidence, exercise scope & narration
Reported facts: LAUSD’s September 5, 2022 notice described IT disruption and planned school opening on September 6. Its preliminary assessment said payroll and school safety mechanisms were unaffected. A September 30 notice warned of threatened publication of stolen data.
Exercise assumptions: Both response paths, the service diagram and its status changes are fictional teaching aids. The entry method, propagation, exact sequence and avoided losses are not established by these sources. Containment is not proof that data was not exposed. Playback compresses the response into five chapters.
Planning recommendation: Rehearse identity recovery, offline attendance and family messaging, isolated backup restoration, service-owner decisions and privacy response. The calculator remains a separate model; applying its preset changes inputs only when you choose the button.
