Research, model assumptions & full transcript

Evidence: Expeditors disclosed a February 2022 cyberattack and a shutdown of most global operating systems. Its 2023 Form 10-K reported approximately $47 million of 2022 incremental demurrage charges, net of recoveries. That company-wide historical amount is not used to calibrate this fictional corridor.

NHTSA’s voluntary guidance supports a risk-based vehicle cybersecurity approach. Its automated-driving guidance includes fallback to a minimal risk condition. This exercise assumes an operational hold pending validation, not remote control of steering or brakes. FMCSA provides ELD malfunction procedures; continued trucking depends on applicable records, hours-of-service limits, and safe operations.

Operational model v1.0: capacity = minimum of dispatch, fleet and hub capacity. Completed loads = min(available queue + arrivals, capacity × interval). Queue = arrivals to date − completed loads. Delay exposure integrates queue length over time (load-hours); once a queue clears, its area stops accumulating. Fleet: 90 human-driven and 30 autonomous vehicles; vehicle counts are illustrative, while capacity is separately assumed in loads/hour.

At 12 hours, delayed response completes 640 loads and queues 560; early containment completes 1,140 and queues 60. Accumulated delay: 3,280 versus 780 load-hours. Modeled cost = load-hours × selected incremental cost + response spending (assumed $180,000 delayed; $120,000 early, accrued linearly from hour 2 to 12). At the default $25, totals are $262,000 and $139,500. Cost inputs are assumptions, not sourced benchmarks. Excludes cargo destruction, lost revenue, injury, liability, insurance, reputational damage and wider economic losses. Do not add overlapping costs from the separate calculator below.

Both branches return to 100/h at hour 12. With 100/h arrivals, remaining backlog does not clear without spare capacity or reduced arrivals. Playback compresses hours into narrated stages. Choosing a response resets the exercise; changing unit cost updates costs immediately. Early containment assumes tested fallback procedures and spare capacity.
